# Anti-glare film

## Overview

Also called "matte film," anti-glare film is one of two popular surface treatments for pen display glass. The other is [Etched glass](/drawtab/guides/pen-displays/etched-glass.md).

This film is attached to the glass with optically clear adhesive.

## Benefits

Anti-glare film provides several benefits:

* It reduces glare and reflections by scattering incoming light.
* It adds texture, which gives the pen more grip. Without it, the glass feels slippery.
* As a film, it provides some protection to the glass underneath.
* Some films can be removed and replaced. If you scratch the film, you can restore the tablet to its original feel.

## Removal and replacement

For some tablets, these films are meant to be removed by the user. Some manufacturers even sell replacements. These films are usually easy to remove.

For other tablets, the film is firmly attached to the glass and is not easy to remove.

If you remove the film, the display will usually look brighter and the colors more vibrant. However:

* you'll notice more glare
* the glass is no longer protected from scratches

## Films are NOT lamination

People sometimes confuse these films with lamination. They are different and provide different benefits:

* These films sit on top of the glass.
* Lamination means the glass is bonded to the display panel underneath.

So it is possible to have a pen display that both has a film and is laminated.
