# Replacing the USB port on a drawing tablet

## Introduction

People with drawing tablets sometimes want to replace the USB port on their tablet.

The reasons vary:

* The port connector has come loose, causing frequent connection interruptions.
* The port has developed an electronic problem and no longer works.
* The port is an old Micro USB port and you may want to use your existing USB-C cables.

Is this possible? YES. Should you do it? Only if you are an expert in electronics.

## This is an expert-level task

Simply put, this requires expertise and experience that most people do not have. You cannot pick up these skills simply by watching a YouTube video.

The skills required include disassembling the tablet, soldering, working with tiny components on a circuit board, handling very small wires, and using a multimeter. One small mistake might permanently ruin your tablet.

## Alternatives for non-experts

**Adapters for Micro USB to USB-C** - if your tablet already works and has a Micro USB port, an adapter is an easy and cheap solution. These work fine, but make sure they support both power and data. They also tend to stick out a bit from the tablet, so avoid pushing up or down on them because that can loosen or damage the port. They have worked well for me. I use them with all my older tablets that have Micro USB ports.

## Where to get expert help

**Option 1: contact local makerspaces.** These communities often include hobbyists with high-end soldering stations, digital microscopes, and the exact skills needed for this work.

**Option 2: contact electronics repair shops.** Look for shops that repair smartphones or tablet screens. They may already handle this kind of port replacement, so they may already have the skills needed. You would need to pay them to do it.
